I used to have a nice job with a good slightly below average income. It’s nothing much, but me & my family live happily with what I earned.
I used to work as a Site Manager for a construction company based in Melaka (or a project manager some people called it, or Civil Engineer whatever lah…) Anyway, I was to manage a construction site, making sure the project run smoothly, although it never did.
Back then, I always thought that my job is very tiring, unchallenging and boring. You know, doing the same thing everyday over and over again, meeting deadlines, facing grumpy Boss & demanding client and not to mention government biro crate procedure, these activity sometimes drove me crazy.
Well on November 2005 my life changes. I left all that behind me when my family & I move to the UK (for a very educational reason). I love to elaborate more about this but that is the story of another day entry. Anyway, the weather was very cold at that time when we first arrived in the UK! and if there were such thing as a Culture shock, my family and I experienced a weather shock. Funny huh?
When I was young, my emak once said “hujan emas di negeri orang, hujan batu di negeri sendiri, baik lagi di negeri sendiri” Meaning “although it’s raining gold in other country but it’s raining stone in our own country, still it’s better in our own country”. So it is very true and that is why this entry is dedicated to the hard time that I’ve been through searching for a bloody jobs and working in the UK.
Here goes…
First Job- From early December 2005 to Late January 2006
Employer : TaskMaster ( it’s a recruitment agency)
Position : Warehouse Cleaner
Duration : 10pm till 6am (Monday to Sunday)
Salary: £6 per hour
Duties include: Unwrapping pallets & cleaning the production line
Comment: I found this job by accident. I was getting in and out of Job
Agency Offices here in Sheffield searching (more like begging) for jobs, but many of the employers rejected me because I don’t have any reference. Till one day, I met Mr. Chris from Taskmaster. He gave me the job because the Warehouse needed a cleaner immediately that night. It was fun working there but unfortunately the warehouse was closed a month later due to reallocation to another region (actually i’m not quite sure why they closed down). Tough Luck.
Second Job- One Day Only in February 2006
Employer : TaskMaster ( Christ got me another job)
Position : General Worker For A Newspaper Production Warehouse
Duration : 10pm till 5am (I did survive till 5am)
Salary: £5 per hour
Duties include: Preparing, lifting and placing heavy newspaper & magazine pallets in a line for distribution.
Comment: This one is a very hard job. I wonder how the workers there can stand the heavy load. I’ve never work that hard my entire life. Still I manage to finish the job till 5am in the morning. The next day, I phoned Christ telling him that I quit. That’s it. Anyway, thanks to Christ for the opportunity that has been given to me. Hard labor work is just not suitable for a gentlemen like me, ha ha…
Third Job- February 2006 Until Now
Employer : RGS Cleaning Ltd
Position : Cleaner For A Private School
Duration : 4pm till 6pm
Salary: £7.50 per hour (approx. £300 per month)
Duties include: Cleaning works, such as mopping, sweeping & sometime buffing the canteen, staff room and the boy’s toilet (sigh!)
Comment: This job is quite easy. It’s is the first time that I’ve seriously doing some cleaning. The buffing machine was fierce. The first time I used it, it nearly swing through my balls! s**t! But every thing is fine now, and I hope it stays that way.
So, I’m picking the gold here left by the rain, but some how the stone back home seems to be more precious. Why? you tell me…
